The Bleaching, Chameleon Crowd

Image
By  Reuben Abati   I wrote a piece recently, a tribute to the late veteran actress Bukky Ajayi and the multi-instrumentalist OJB Jezreel, in which I raised a number of issues, including how in Nollywood today, there is an obsession with the whitening of skin, an anti-Negritude yellowing, what I referred to as “the bleaching, chameleon crowd of Nollywood beauties.” The various reactions to the piece conveniently ignored this subject; two young ladies who felt that I was probing an unpopular theme drew my attention to this. I was reminded that being light-skinned is now the in-thing, indeed the socially acceptable norm, because there is now a universalization of the concept of beauty and self-esteem. The more light-skinned you are, the more acceptable you are in various circumstances, that is. I thought if this was true, then it is a tragedy indeed for the black world. For, once upon a time in the history of the black race, being black was a thing of joy and an instrument ...

Image
Aramide  of  Lifestake Foundation  has helped many Nigerian who were in dire need of funds to cover medical care. A visit to the  Foundation’s website  will illustrate the work done so far by Lifestake. BellaNaija has previously featured the foundation  on our site as part of our Social Responsibility Programme which supports numerous non-profits with free media support. With the controversy over the  #SaveMayowa  fundraising campaign yesterday, Aramide was one of the key people mentioned alongside Nollywood actress  Toyin Aimakhu . In this video posted on her Facebook page, Aramide explains what led to yesterday’s events. Based on her explanation, it appears to be a case of miscommunication and heated reactions. She admits that perhaps the situation could have been handled better and apologizes to anyone hurt by this. She confirms that the Nigerian Police is now handling the case. Pictured is the moment an off-duty Swedish police officer/bodybuilder tackled a pickpocket on the ground, while wearing only a bikini. Mikaela Kellner, a police officer of 11 years, was sunbathing in a park with friends when the pickpocket approached them. Under the guise of selling magazines for the homeless, the man began talking to the group of bikini-clad women. He placed a newspaper over their mobile phones which were on a blanket, allegedly picked up one and left. When they realized he had stolen something, Kellner and another friend, who is also a police officer chased the man, slammed him to the floor and put him in a painful arm-lock before police arrived to arrest him.

Image
Michael Jackson's nephews, Taj, TJ and Taryll Jackson, part of the 90s boy band popularly known as 3T, just slapped Radar Online with a $100 million libel lawsuit, after the online tabloid reported that Michael Jackson molested young boys and that his nephews were among the victims. Mikel Obi denies making $30,000 donation to Olympic squad

Image
John Mikel Obi has denied media reports making the rounds in Nigeria that he gave 30,000 dollars to his team –mates in the U23 team presently camping in Atlanta, USA. Speaking from the team's camp at the Hyatt Place, the Captain of Team Nigeria to the Rio Olympics was furious: "I was first told of this unfortunate story by a friend who called me from Nigeria. I thought he was joking until he sent me the link. I don't know the source of this story which to me is all out to divide us as a team. I would have thought that stories that should be coming out in the media are stories that will unite the team instead of dividing us. Our target in Rio is to excel, but if they continue like this, then I wonder how we can be united." Wondering why the writer thinks that the players are hungry that needed his money, Mikel asked: "Tell me the players who are in this team that are so hungry that will be looking up to me for survival? Is it (William) Ek...

Dangote drops out of World's Top 100 Rich list as Naira crashes

Image
Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, has dropped out of the list of top 100 richest people in the world. This is largely due to the devaluation of the Naira. Dangote who owns the second largest sugar-refinery in the world, remains richer than American billionaires, Donald Trump, and Oprah Winfrey who ranks as the second richest black woman in the world. Dangote is now worth $11.1 billion, while Trump and Oprah are estimated at $4.5 billion and $3.1 billion, respectively. The devaluation of the Naira against the dollar from about 198 to about 300, has eroded about a quarter of Dangote’s wealth as he continues to invest heavily in Nigeria. At the launch of the new foreign exchange regime on June 23rd, Dangote fell from number 46 on the world billionaire list to 71 and has continued to drop as the Naira continues to crash. According to Bloomberg billionaires, Dangote, who was worth $15.4 billion (N3.05 trillion) in March, is now worth $11.1 billion (N3.3 trillion) - richer in...

Can It Start Off Casual & End Up Being Something More?

Image
By  Uru Eke   Ladies and Gents, get in here! Usually I write for the ladies because most of my inspiration comes from women, but on this occasion this topic cuts across both genders. I want to talk about casual relationships, Booty Calls, Dial – A – Lay, situationships, friends with benefits, hook-ups, DTFing or whatever you want to call them. Is it possible to go wide eyed into any one these instances without developing feelings? I want to believe every one of us at some point has been caught up one way or the other in this mess and found ourselves left hanging with emotions for someone who may or may not have reciprocated them. My friend told me about a guy she was DTFing (down to f&%?ing) and how the guy began to develop feelings. When she began to give him some distance he turned a bit hostile. I told her to talk to him that in as much as it was a bit of fun for her; he probably just went along with it to see if it would develop into something more an...

The Nigerian Woman and the Naira

Image
By   Nmasinachi Agada   We all know what’s going on with the Naira as against the US Dollar. As an economist, it’d make for an interesting conversation, but since I can’t quite remember the exact graphs with which I’d illustrate my arguments, I’d spare you the time, and take this from another dimension. For starters, the Naira is ours; and even if its value drops faster and in a heavier manner than the tears of a widow, it would never lose its identity as ours. It will not matter than ₦16,000 cannot buy the $100 bag it used to. It’ll matter that the ₦500 bill in your hand can buy a meat pie and pack of juice, which of course is less than you would have been able to buy with the same denomination just a few months ago. A while ago, I was feeling like our currency; strained and not just enough. Perhaps a lot of women out there can find adjectives for themselves that will fit well in the Naira’s reality. Many people can no longer go where they used to, have a depreciated ...
