Over 100 people killed as Cuban Boeing 737 carrying 113 passengers and crew explodes moments after taking off from Havana airport

Today, a Boeing 737 plane crashed moments after taking off from Havana's Jose Marti International Airport, killing over 100 of its 113 passengers and crew barely 24 hours after more than a third of its fleet were grounded over safety concerns.   Cuba's newly sworn in president Miguel Diaz-Canel confirmed there was a 'high number of casualties' after the internal Cubana de Aviacion flight crashed into a yuca field near a high school, in the Santiago de las Vegas neighborhood, on Friday.  Just three survivors have been recovered so far - all in critical condition, according to Cuban media. Photos of the scene show fire crews attempting to put out the still smoking wreckage of the aircraft which was devastated in the crash. School proprietor and principal tie students to crosses and flog them for coming late to school (photos)

The proprietor of a school in Ogun state has been arrested for allegedly tying two pupils to a cross while the principal flogged them afterward. Afolayan Joseph, proprietor of Metorite Standard School in the Ayetoro area of Ogun state and the school's principal are reported to have meted out the callous punishment to the students, then attacked a police officer who ordered them to untie the students.  Punch Metro reports that the policeman, whose name was given only as Livinus, ordered Afolayan Joseph to untie the students but the proprietor refused then went on to also beat up the policeman. Following the attack, Livinus called the Divisional Police Officer of the Itele Police Station to send officers to arrest the proprietor and his principal. 104-year-old scientist David Goodall ends life listening to 'Ode to Joy'

(CNN) A 104-year-old Australian scientist who had campaigned for the legalization of assisted dying in his home country has ended his life at a Swiss clinic, a representative from the pro-euthanasia group Exit International said. David Goodall, a respected botanist and ecologist, died Thursday at the Life Circle clinic in Basel, Switzerland, after administering a lethal drug under the guidance of doctors. Exit International, which represented the scientist, said Goodall passed away while listening to Beethoven's "Ode to Joy."
